Literacy

At St Lawrence Primary School, we believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for all learning. From Prep to Year 6, we prioritise the development of reading, writing, speaking and listening through a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that supports every child to succeed.

Evidence-Based Instruction

Our Literacy program is underpinned by the Science of Learning and follows an evidence-based model of reading and writing instruction. We are committed to using high-impact teaching strategies that build solid foundations and promote deep understanding across all year levels, using the Victorian Curriculum, aligning with MACS’ Vision for Instruction (Link: https://www.macs.vic.edu.au/MelbourneArchdioceseCatholicSchools/media/Documentation/Documents/Vision-For-Instruction-Position-Statement.pdf

A Structured and Supportive Approach

We follow the Learning and Teaching Cycle, which guides our students through clear stages of learning:

  • Building topic knowledge
  • Building genre knowledge
  • Engaging in explicit teaching through the Gradual Release of Responsibility model (I do, we do, you do)
  • Applying learning through practice and reflection

This structured approach ensures all students are supported as they grow in confidence and independence as readers and writers.
